Dual Depth Measurements

The 930 takes moisture readings in your wood from the surface down to .25” (6.4mm) in depth in the shallow scan mode or from the surface down to .75” (19mm) in the deep scan mode.

IntelliSense™ Technology

Orion 910, 930, 940, and 950 pinless wood moisture meters incorporate IntelliSense™ technology in their ¾” (19mm) deep reading modes. This enables accurate determination of the moisture content deeper in the wood while minimizing the effect that surface moisture will have on the meter readings. Pin-type meters may be able to bypass the surface conditions, but they also damage the surface of the wood every time you take a reading.

Fast Selection Species Settings

With simple up/down arrow buttons, your Orion 930 meter can be easily and quickly set for the wood species you need to measure. Plus, the range of settings accommodates practically any softwood or hardwood species in the world. The Orion 930 can also be configured to measure some non-solid wood products such as plywood, OSB, or MDF. Orion meters also have species settings for many bamboo flooring products.

Non-Damaging Pinless Sensor

Every Orion meter features electromagnetic wave technology…a non-damaging way to quickly and accurately measure the moisture content of wood or other materials. Compared against pin meters, the pinless sensor technology of the Orion line of meters does not damage the wood and also eliminates the frustrations and costs of broken pins, common with pin-type meters.

Virtually Unaffected by Temperature

Every Orion pinless meter is virtually unaffected by the temperature of the wood or the environment. Unlike pin meters, Orion’s sensing technology does not need correction or adjustment to account for the temperature of the wood.

True In-The-Field Calibration

No need to return your Orion to the factory for calibration. Every Orion meter comes with an individually paired On-Demand Calibrator allowing you to easily calibrate your meter anytime*, ensuring that you will always be able to obtain accurate moisture measurements. Relative Moisture Measurement Mode

A relative moisture measurement mode allows for taking relative moisture measurements in non-wood based materials and engineered wood flooring. This means you can use an Orion moisture meter to obtain relative moisture conditions on a number of non-wood building materials and flooring products.

Press to Hold Readings

On every Orion moisture meter, if you press down once on the ON/HOLD button it will hold the moisture reading you took. This is quite useful if you’re measuring in a hard to reach area.

Programmable Alarm

The Orion 930 includes a user-programmable, audible alarm for high moisture content levels.

I use this meter from sawmill all the way to to kiln dried state. I like using the dual depth to make sure the wood is dried all the way through. This unit is less expensive than the old model, a pleasant bonus. Good company to work with.

A tool for measuring moisture content wont be the most exciting thing you ever purchase, but probably the most important. I have a different cheap moisture meter that is horrible. This one works amazing and is extremely accurate. I will use it on every wood project I ever have to complete.

Pin meter is much more accurate and reliables, would not recommend this meter for testing MC% in lumber.

I had a slow dishwasher leak in the kitchen and had to tear up a large section of the maple flooring. I bought this meter to be certain I had everything dried out and that the moisture content of the underlayment and new flooring had sufficiently balanced before I began installation of the new floor. I had a question on using the meter in Relative mode and also over USB, so I emailed support at Wagner meters. I also mentioned the manual was a little lacking in the Relative mode section. The very next day I received an in-depth reply. They even noted my comment on the section that was lacking in the manual. Here was Tony's response: "You are quite right about the explanation on how to use the Relative mode. I appreciate your bringing this to my attention. I have made a recommendation to amend the manual."
Needless to say, I was very pleased with both the product and the support.

Finally a moisture meter that gives an accurate reading, with simple to use, easy to read controls. We are a custom sawmill company in Oregon.We also kiln dry wood for ourselves and customers. I've been using a pair of Delmhorst J-2000 pin meters for years and resigned myself to the hassles of removing broken pins from the wood, having to return the meters semi-annually to get them repaired (at $200 a pop) and the inconsistent readings they provided. I've recently obtained a Wagner Orion 930 and it's a game changer.For the same price as the J-2000 the Orion930 is a much better investment.

For starters, having the ability to move freely over the lumber or slab enables me to find water pockets much easier. With the pin meter it's always a guessing game that a good reading in one spot is the same elsewhere without pounding pins across the face of the wood.

To satisfy my curiosity I've been comparing readings between the 2 types of meters and both are within .2-.3% mcv., which gives me confidence that the Wagner meter is accurate.The size and ease of use with the Orion 930 is also a bonus. Having to carry the hammer and meter around was always a hassle. I can slip the Orion930 into my pocket and not worry about leaving it somewhere.

Finally, the comprehensive list of species and appropriate settings on the Orion930 was pleasant surprise. We mainly mill local indigenous hardwoods but occasionally come across an exotic or odd wood that isn't listed in the Delmhorst manual. Reading through the list in the Wagner meter is like reading a complete book of species. Great buy at a fair price!

I am very pleased with the Orion Moisture meter. I have written an article titled Air Drying, Kiln Drying, and Thermally Modifying that I am planning to submit to Fine Woodworking to see if they will use it in their publication. I am going to show a photo of the Orion in the draft article when it is sent. I am hoping that they will pick it up for the magazine. I will put in a side bar that I personally use the Orion for checking moisture here at Bailey Wood Products, Inc.
