Let’s start with when and why they started using them in the first place.

Why Did PCP Start Using the Smart Logger?

Brian says: “We’ve been using the Smart Loggers for several years now for the same application—for monitoring the temperature and the humidity in rooms.”

To clarify, they track ambient conditions in a room or section of a job as long as they’re working on it (or considered responsible for it).

PCP’s jobs can last anywhere from a month to several years. For example, at the time of this write-up, they’re in their third year of working on a VA hospital in Detroit. The longer length isn’t only about the size of the project, but because they often cover multiple stages of a project—like framing, fireproofing, drywall, custom ceilings, and more.

And at any stage, building materials can fail if temperature and relative humidity aren’t properly monitored and considered.

For example, both temperature and relative humidity can impact moisture levels. Porous building materials, like wood and drywall, are sensitive to moisture. And other materials, like fireproofing spray, must be stored at specific temperatures to meet industry regulations.

That’s why having a device on the jobsite to monitor ambient conditions is one of the major keys to their success.

In the past, they had to use “a meter that was about the size of a disc” and had a lot of room for error.

Then they discovered the Smart Logger. And they haven’t looked back.

Brian estimates they use at least 100 Smart Loggers a year. He says:

“I just recently ordered another batch of 40 for our job in Ann Arbor for the University of Michigan student housing. … Almost every job we do, we have them on hand. It could be one or two of them, to a dozen, to more than a dozen.”

But it also builds long-term trust with customers.

PCP does what it takes to do the job right, including backing up their decisions with data. The Smart Logger gives them real data they can take back to the customer—which for them, is usually the GC.

Brian emphasizes:

“They rely on our word. If we give them that information, they’re going to say, ‘You know what? They’re right. We need to do something to supplement the conditions in these areas.’”

Providing reliable info is one reason they have contractors who’ve worked with them for over 50 years and hired them for hundreds of jobs.

They also use the Smart Logger for maintaining conditions required for certifications. For example, they used the Smart Logger for UL-compliant fireproofing installations:

“I would…print out the graphs and give them to the appropriate individuals so they could submit it to the UL laboratory. So they could say, ‘Yeah, Pontiac Ceiling and Partition is storing this material correctly. They’re within the guidelines of keeping their certification and license.’”

“So we don’t just use it for installing interior trim and cabinets and drywall. It’s also for storing material that is temperature- and humidity-sensitive.”

The Smart Logger is often used by those in flooring and construction to monitor conditions for wood acclimation and concrete slab drying.

But commercial construction companies like PCP have found a wide application for Smart Loggers. They’ve found them useful for anything where it’s important to monitor temperature and relative humidity. For example:

  • Storing material
  • Drywall finishes
  • Interior trim
  • Cabinets (by their sister company)
  • Acoustic ceilings—because they “have to be installed within certain temperatures, so it acclimates correctly and doesn’t warp.”

He says especially with the custom ceilings, not working under the right conditions could lead to “expensive damage.”

He even sees a use for painters—who are often the very next trade to start work after PCP completes theirs—because they need a “certain humidity and temperature for the paint to dry.”

To sum it all up, here’s what PCP finds most useful about this device.

According to Brian, what’s nice about Smart Loggers is:

Installing and Monitoring in Real Time

When it comes to installing the Smart Logger, Brian estimates:

“It shouldn’t take you more than 5 minutes. It takes 2 screws to attach it to the wall, and then as long as you have the app already on there, it should take no more than 5 minutes to get it on the wall and get it up and going. That’s how user-friendly it is.”

It’s as easy as:

  1. Pulling a tab to activate the battery.
  2. Turning it on.
  3. Attaching it to the wall.
  4. Connecting it to the app that’s downloaded on your phone.
  5. Setting high and low parameters for temperature and relative humidity monitoring.

Brian says if they can’t screw it to a wall, they use double-sided tape. (The Smart Loggers also come with an adhesive pad, in addition to small screws.) That makes it even easier to move the Smart Logger to a new location when they’re done with a room or section—which is something his team does often.

“What’s going to happen is, the GC’s gonna come by and say, ‘Let’s take a look at these 12 rooms.’ Those 12 rooms are all set up. They’re done. … Then maybe the painters are going to come in, so we could take those Smart Loggers off the wall… . The customer signed off. They approved those 12 rooms. Now it’s in the hands of the painters. And once a painter applies paint to that room, it’s no longer our responsibility.”

“So, if there’s going to be wallpaper applied or you have some type of finish and another trade comes in, the minute they apply something to that wall, then it’s the other trade’s responsibility.”

Brian’s team isn’t installing Smart Loggers and leaving them there forever. They keep them in a room until their part of the job is done.

In other cases, like the University of Michigan student housing project, they’ll have 40 Smart Loggers in 40 rooms simultaneously.

He also likes that it’s easy to change the battery on a Smart Logger, so you can reuse it until the storage is full. (One battery can last up to three years, depending on monitoring frequency.)

Downloading the free Wagner Sentry app is a one-time step, so any Smart Loggers you install can send info to your smart device (phone, laptop, etc.) via Bluetooth. This allows you to grab the stored temperature and relative humidity readings when you’re in range on the jobsite.

Then you can leave the jobsite with all the current and historic data on your phone. This allows you to organize the data, study the graph, and even email a PDF report from anywhere.

When you first connect a Smart Logger to the app, you can set high and low parameters for temperature and relative humidity. If levels get outside these parameters, the Smart Logger sends a notification to the app when you’re in Bluetooth range.

Or if you’re off the job and then return to Bluetooth range, it will show you all the times when conditions went out of range. And you can track patterns.

So how does Brian’s team respond when they get an alert?

“When we used to store fireproofing material spray, if the room got too hot or too cold, I would get that alert and would have to take appropriate action.

“The room I used to store it was against two exterior walls. So if it got too cold there, I would plug in a fan that was built into an interior wall that would suck heat in there so I could make that adjustment.

“Or if it was summertime, I had an air conditioner built into the wall so I could adjust accordingly. … It was nice backup for me saying, ‘Okay, it set off the alarm,’ and within maybe 2 to 3 minutes, I was able to readjust the room’s temperature and record it.”

“Our guys could say the same thing. They could say to the general contractor, ‘Hey, these rooms are…not getting the proper airflow, and…you guys need to get the HVAC guys in to make the adjustments so things work accordingly.’ And then, since you’re bringing that to the contractor’s attention, you usually have some type of follow-up with an email so you have something in writing that says, ‘I did talk to you on this particular day, and it was fixed—or it was not fixed yet.’”
