Specific Gravity (SG) Settings for OSB and Plywood

Use the specific gravity (SG) settings below when you measure plywood, OSB, or MDF with a Wagner Orion^® pinless moisture meter.

When measuring plywood, OSB, and MDF, avoid taking readings over obvious defects, voids, or very rough areas, over nails or screws, or where sheets are joined. Readings taken in these spots will be inaccurate. Make sure the sensor plate on the back of the meter is completely covered by the material. When you measure a loose panel, keep at least a 1″ (25 mm) air gap underneath it, and keep your hand out from under the meter.

Material thickness matters, too. In the ¾” (deep) mode, Orion meters read about ¾” (19 mm) into the material, so they will read low on thinner panels. For panels thinner than ½” (12.7 mm), use the ¼” (shallow) mode on the Orion 930, 940, or 950. The Orion 920 reads to ¼” (6.4 mm). With the Orion 910, which reads only in the ¾” mode, stack two or more pieces together for a composite reading.
