Why Test In-Situ Probes 40% Deep in Concrete Slabs?

Why is 40% depth the standard when testing in-situ probes in concrete slabs? In this video, Wagner Meters’ RH expert Jason Spangler explains the science and standards behind proper probe placement and why it matters for accurate moisture readings.

Following ASTM F2170 guidelines, probes must be placed at 40% of the slab’s thickness (when drying from one side) to reflect the true moisture condition of the slab. Testing too shallow often gives misleading results, which can lead to flooring failures, costly callbacks, and damaged reputations.
