Although engineered flooring is less susceptible to moisture and can be installed in areas unsuitable for solid wood, it is not meant for extreme conditions. Large humidity swings, excess moisture, and a lack of climate control can cause engineered flooring to break down just like wood floors. Find out what’s absolutely necessary to avoid costly callbacks and unhappy customers.
Sure, wood that comes out of a kiln is likely to be at the proper level of moisture content. But because of the nature of wood, it can easily re-absorb moisture by the time it’s ready to be installed as wood flooring. If flooring contains too much moisture, serious problems – leading to costly callbacks – can occur after installation. But there’s an easy, fail-safe way to avoid disaster.
BUCKLING: A Common Wood Flooring Problem
Buckling occurs when wood flooring actually pulls away from its sub-floor, lifting up to several inches in one or more places. This is one of the most extreme reactions to moisture that can occur in wood flooring applications. Fortunately, this does not happen often. The most common reason that buckling occurs is after a floor has been flooded for a period of time. Other causes on nailed floors might be insufficient nailing, incorrect nails or incorrect subfloor construction. On glued floors, use of incorrect or insufficient mastics to an inadequate mastic transfer, a subfloor separation or a subfloor contamination can cause buckling.
