Adhesive Breakdown and Flooring Betrayal
The new floor is in, and the diplomats are arriving for the show. What's that smell? Why is glue seeping from the cracks between floor tiles!? Welcome to adhesive breakdown in flooring, a catastrophic product of moisture content and high pH.
Moisture vapor naturally evaporates from the surfaces of all concrete floors. If installers used a calcium chloride test to measure a moisture vapor emissions rate (MVER), they learn that the floor contains 2.76 pounds of water crystals per thousand square feet of floor. Generally, moisture vapor experts do not install floor covering materials with an MVER rate exceeding three-to-five pounds. In this scenario, the contractor likely proceeded, because the MVER read less than "3"...

Understanding the Influence of Vapor Retarders
Water is a crucial ingredient in a strong concrete mixture. Contractors know that, and consumers should. The imagination struggles, however, with the idea that concrete needs to breathe its moisture back into the atmosphere once poured. Concrete is not alive, yet the interactive, natural process of moisture evaporation is at the core of understanding the need for vapor retarders...

From the Forum: RH & CC Testing
Maybe someone can help me understand why a certified testing company would recommend both RH and calcium chloride testing on the same job, considering the "risk" that a key decision maker would likely opt to use the more preferable (lower reading) test results to base their decision to install floor coverings.
I always recommend the RH test method for all the reasons we already know, and have only conducted one calcium chloride test in the last 2 years. To me, this is a no brainer.
