Road rash was no fun but part of the deal. All you can do is to do your best to ride safe and thank God for getting you home safely every time to pull back into your garage after every ride whether its 2 miles or 2,000 miles.

And if something's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. Ain't nothin you can do to change fate.

Do you have the patronising "temporary American" label in the US, like we do?

At the tender age of 20-something my most speckie crash was on my learner bike, the monstrously lethal Yamaha XS 250. I had hallucinations about being Mick Doohan. My then-fiancee, now bride of 18 years, took me to the hospital. Fluid on the knee and denim-burns were painful, but not as painful as the pontificating doctor lecturing about how stupid motorcyclists are, he introduced me to the term "Temporary Australian". I asked him what comfortable, noise-less, isolated padded car he drove and, you'll never guess it- he was a bloody volvo driver.

The bride paid for the repairs to the bike. Good sort, that girl.

No we don't say temporary American. What does that mean?

In college I met a few guys that adopted an English accent and used it to hit on the ladies. I guess they were temporary Britts or something like that.
