Without government funding they would cost a lot more than they do, and seriously, do they save money? Or even the planet? If the average soccer mom drives 12,000 miles a year and drives a VW Jetta diesel she'll spend $1,150 a year on fuel. She can drive for thousands of miles without worrying about plugging in the car and dealing with a 100 mile range limit. Oh, she could get a hybrid car that has battery and electric, but then she's burning fuel and has the whole battery issue to deal with. The batteries? They will need to be replaced in about 4 years. Cost? Right around $3500. And while you charge them the power is coming form a coal burning electric plant. I just don't buy into the idea......
