Just recommending following the book man.... Big Grin

It's not so hard to do! Just do it according to the manufacturer's guidelines!

That's my mantra, and that's all my company does. We measure every pint of water in our self-leveling underlayment, and we put down a lot of it! We use a timer when we mix products. If the bag says mix 2-3 minutes, we mix for 2 minutes, 30 seconds.

It just amazes me when installers just do their own thing and make up methods as they go. It must be because of the number of times I've been in 'discussions' on who gets to pay for jobs that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair. And those are the jobs I now do. The liability when you are putting in tens of thousands of feet of epoxy and/or underlayment that will get a rubber floor and then have OR tables plopped on them is staggering. I just can't afford to cut corners.

I just can't afford to NOT do things right. Wink

Not kidding, just found out an installer was using a gallon measure when instructions called for a quart. He didn't know the difference.

Glad he doesn't work for me.

Ha ha ha... With SLU's you know when you have a quart too much water right away! You get to know the feel of it, and can tell a 47 pound bag from a 52 pound bag when you dump the barrel. The water is the same, but the mix is different.

We clean every barrel after every pour too. We were video'd once by a manufacturer's rep. He had never seen anyone do what we do. It becomes second nature! Once we lost the timer and had a small 30 bag batch to pour and my guys wouldn't do it (bless their hearts Heart

) they fired up a stopwatch on a smart phone and used that to keep time for mixing.

Then tell me why is has not failed?

I fix a lot of flooring in fortune 500 stores thats been installed "correctly" by the book. I don't ever see many floors in huge commercal projects that lasts tens years either. You've seen it I am sure.

I have a measuring container for my patch and slc as well, even my grout. Big deal.

Hospitals will keep flooring as long as they can. It costs a boatload to shut down your OR suite and replace the flooring. With proper maintenance a good floor will last 20 years easily. Even VCT will last that long.

Glad you measure your mixes. I see installers that go by feel, and not the big thing around here is to mix several different patches to create a hybrid patch. I haven't met any installer yet that uses Forti-Finish straight from the bag. When those jobs have problems what will Ardex have to say about them? Huh

I still mix my thinset the old fashioned way, has to stick to the side of a clean trowel held sideways and not fall off. Dodgy

I'm sure you guys that have mixed this stuff for dozens of years know what you are looking for.

I only work with a few products, I don't see nearly as many as a flooring installer will.

People who mix different patches oer thinsets are just asking for trouble. The products are not designed to mix, especially with other manufacturers products.
