Ardex promotes the Wagner Rapid RH probe!

#1
I made a pilgrimage to Ardex in Alliquippa, PA to check on the guys working in the plant and to verify they are still putting 50lbs in a 50lb bag. Wink

If you have never been to an Ardex plant (there are two in the states now) I can heartily recommend the experience. Ardex hires top shelf personnel, and trains them extensively. And the company sticks behind them, which is important so that what you are told in the field is what they will honor.

Anyway, I was sitting in a conference room with one of their new guys, Jeff, and was going through the moisture testing part of their training. Jeff pulled out his Wagner Rapid RH box and said, "We don't get paid to show these, and I have no affiliation with this company, but I like these probes".

Jeff then showed us how to use the probes (too briefly for my tastes, and I kept interjecting important tidbits of knowledge that would help these new recruits on the front lines i.e. Jeff would brush and vacuum the hole while I would triple and quadruple brush and vac, and I explained the reason we drill 40% or 20%, why we check for fluted decks and the concept of equilibration..... I've been working with these guys for 16 years.... they KNOW I'm going to jump in at these classes Big Grin ) anyway, I couldn't resist and had to ask Jeff if Ardex relied exclusively on RH testing for their slab moisture readings. Jeff said yes. Then I said I know Ardex prefers Wagner Rapid RH, but do they exclude other manufacturers? Unfortunately he said they do not at this time. As long as the test method follows the ASTM, Ardex will accept it.

While I was disappointed to hear that news, it did open the door for me to jump in again and explain the differences in probe design and the troubles inherent with sleeves and leapfrogging readers, along with calibration confirmation requirements. By the time I was done I think I had everyone convinced that for the low introductory price of a reader, and then the speed and accuracy of each probe, using anything but a Wagner would be ludicrous! Tongue

I made some believers, but really when I pitch Wagner I help myself and all of us working in this business. Accurate RH readings are vitally important, and the more Rapid RH testing we do and the more everyone see the Wagner and knows about it, the better off we all are. RH testing is seen as voodoo by some, and I have to believe it is because of poor testing equipment and unqualified and/or uncaring testers performing these tests. We are changing that with every Wagner we use.

Ah -HAH! Sprung, JD. We all know you're just a corporate stooge with a vested interest in promoting RH and particularly Wagner!

We scoff at your 27+ years of experience in the field of MS flooring and troubleshooting! Fess up, how much are Wagner, Ardex, Exxon Mobil and Sonoco paying you!!? Big Grin

Off topic slightly- do Koster and Ardex require training and accreditation for applying their mitigation systems? I was looking for some Koster products down under but could only find an agent selling general waterproofing stuff, not the flooring moisture vap systems.

Pat, truly you are a breath of fresh air.... Tongue

Ardex will sell to anyone. Shameless profiteers they are... Wink However without training prior to installations they will not issue a warranty beyond their one year product warranty.

Koster will not sell to you unless you are a certified Koster rep. I don't know about the OZ market, but I would think they need an entire support network set up before they begin selling a product like VAP-2000.

Either 'certification' involves copious amounts of drinking and long mornings of keeping a pseudo interested look on your mug while trying to decide if your hung-over body is ever going to be the same. Anyone can be certified. Of the two, I would say Koster has a more comprehensive certification with an actual test and much more in depth training. Neither programs are anywhere near enough knowledge to be more than a basic product installer.

As far as being paid, well I kind of am. I got an Ardex t-shirt last week. And my sales rep is very very good to me. He never lets me buy lunch. Koster is the same way, they love their promoters. And Wagner? I can't say on their own blog, but they have been extremely generous with anything I have ever needed. Do you know you can call and talk to Ed Wagner directly? I had a question once and the nice receptionist said she'd get me someone who could answer it for me and the next thing I heard is, "Hello, Ed Wagner here." Wow, talk about taking it to the top! But honestly at Wagner you get good people no matter who you talk to. I think Ed and Eric do their homework before they bring someone into the company.

Having worked for Ardex in various positions for a total of 10 years; gone through extensive training, and more, I am now providing RH testing services (ICRI Certified) and enjoying every day doing it. Yes, Ardex and Koster are in it for the money. Aren't we all? But we collectively care about doing things right - every time. Both companies stand behind their products when they're installed properly. I can tell you that of the all Ardex failures I was called upon to look at (and still see), virtually 99% of the time they were due to installer error. Rushing, or not taking the time to read and follow directions was typically the case. As far as Wagner, I'm not into promoting the system (that's their job). My job is to provide professional, thorough, accurate, impartial testing services. My obligation is to use what works - and Wagner RH flat out works. And I trust them to work every time.

JD: I know what you mean Smile. I'm also a member of the forum on Linkedin and it can get pretty dicey at times. But nonetheless, I have gleened a lot of great knowledge and insights I apply to my growing testing business!

Amen, welcome to the thread, JK.

Glad to hear your business is growing. Neccessity is the mother of invention Smile

So is your testing service a sideline to other work or is it your core* business?
