World of Concrete

Did you go? Or go to Surfaces the week after?

This was our first trip. I took along one of my superintendents so we could touch base with others in the field. From what I hear the attendance was down a LOT. I got to meet quite a few of my friends and had some nice dinners.

My Sup hadn't been to Vegas for about 20 years so the changes were startling to him. We went and saw the pawn shop where Pawn Stars is filmed.... Wow is that place small and run down!!! Amazing what a TV camera can do. And most of what they sell now is promotional shirts and mugs. Really disappointing.

We stayed at the Encore. I highly recommend that place!!! Rooms were booking at $280 a night but we got ours for $130 on Orbitz and that included $100 credit for a 3 night stay. Just don't look at the snacks in your room for more than 30 seconds: They have a sensor on them and you get charged for the item if they are removed. Small snack size bag of chips? $8! Tiny tin of Gummy Bears? $8!

It's getting hard to find cheap food. Some poorer buffets can still be had for $8 or so if you sign up for the casino's frequent gambler card. I paid $33 for two coffees and two croissants at the Wynn. OUCH!

But Vegas is a hoot, and I love to go there just to people watch and see the architecture.

No WOC this year with it being a different week.

Surfaces was a joke. That show is going to die. It is really irreverent (as a show) today with the internet. It is still a place for sales meetings but my primary suppler has moved it's meeting elsewhere as they are sick of spending on surfaces when people really don't want to go.

Good point about the internet. People can see video demonstrations, order materials, join chat groups, and rub elbows right from their keyboard.

The internet is killing the standard store also. I went into a Staples and asked if they had a certain pencil sharpener I found on the online Staples.com. No they didn't. So I ordered it online.

Same thing happened at a Best Buy. "We don't stock a lot of stuff, you can just get it online" I was told. I told the young lady that should worry her if she values her job. She didn't understand.

I was shopping for a television and the salesman new nothing about the model I wanted. He couldn't answer simple questions even. He offered to look the information up online. I told him I can do that myself. I did, and then ordered it through Amazon.

Have you ever asked a question about a product and had the salesman pick up the box and start reading it to see if he could find the answer?

If I were a salesman I'd try to know everything I could about all my products. Otherwise what good is a salesman? Just to get the box down from a high shelf?

Sorry, kind of got off on a tangent there.... It's one of those days. Tongue

Who has that kinda money to blow just to go look at new samples. They need to start offering much more than that in these difficult times.

And the internet...I can;t get half of the sundrys or tools I need here in Tucson. I have made an Amazon account. They are just up the road in Phoenix or at most in NV and I get most anything I want in one or two days.

The World of Concrete is like Michael Jackson.... Just won't die!!!! Tongue

One of my employees swiped his card at almost every booth he visited, from concrete stains and additives to elk hunting trips.... Problem is all the passes were tied to my email account! I am still being flooded with email offers, one company even took the liberty of sending me a 7" diamond grinding wheel with replaceable diamond segments, but they also included a $400 bill with the 'sample' blade... Sad

Just made my reservations for WOC. Plan to attend the Quality in Slabs Luncheon & Forum sponsored by Wagner. I won the Tweet and Win on Twitter so I feel like I gotta go!

Now I need advise on what other education to go for. I think people on the forum understand what I have trouble with...

I am wondering if the Thursday Friday Cracks courses are right:
Thursday: Troubleshooting Concrete Cracks
Presenters(s): Kim Basham
http://connect.worldofconcrete.com/connect/public/SessionDetails.aspx?SessionID=7102&maxSessions=176

Friday: Repairing Concrete Cracks
Presenters(s): Kim Basham
http://connect.worldofconcrete.com/connect/public/SessionDetails.aspx?SessionID=7103&maxSessions=176

or I should do the Floor and Slabs classes:
Wednesday: Toppings and Overlays—Getting Them Right the First Time

http://connect.worldofconcrete.com/connect/public/SessionDetails.aspx?SessionID=7013&maxSessions=176

Thursday: Protect Yourself from Poor Slab Designs—Understand Basics of Good Slab Design & Recognize Poor
