I've done a little homework since asking this question so I'll share with you some of what I found so far (I didn't find a lot out there on this). Personally, I doubt I will ever use the hood method. The only difference I see between it and the calcium chloride test is that it's measuring RH instead of MVER. It's still only measuring at the surface. I was reading an article in FCI that backed up what Trever said, that the readings run lower than the in-situ probes. Why would I want to risk my butt on something that is going to tell me I'm ok when I'm not?! I'm still interested in hearing if anyone has had good/bad experiences, but from what I've read so far, the convenience of not drilling does not unreliable readings.
